Shhhh! Daddy at Rest!

Thanks to the ultra-strength of my amazing wife, we welcomed our happy and healthy baby boy into the world a couple weeks ago. Lizzy and I are so joyful and lucky to have little Sam in our life. Further good news: My previously honed skill of waking up at 3:00 a.m. to run a 100 miler has translated nicely into waking up at 3:00 a.m. to feed Sammy these days. ...and I'm sure once he gains the ability to see a little better, he'll be just as big a fan of my shiny belt buckles as I am!

Just a few more notes to fill the gap during my running hiatus:
  • In terms of getting back to running: Totally guessing on this, but I think we'll have a good handle on the daily routine with Sammy in a couple months, so I'll probably start kicking the rust off my legs by mid-Spring. Once Sam is street-legal (a.k.a. develops neck muscles so he can safely ride in a running stroller) in June/July, I'll begin taking him on daily adventures and that will probably allow me to get back to something close to proper training load.
  • I've found a couple nice ones, but if anyone has real-world experience with a great high-mileage running stroller, let me know. The Baby Jogger High Performance model looks to be pretty solid on paper...
  • If all goes well, I'll plan on a couple tune-up races in August & September, and then have some fun out at the Grindstone 100 in October. Nothing like 24,000+ feet of climbing to welcome me back to the 100 miler world!
  • I'd like to do one more "real" race at the end of the year, and I think heading back to AZ for a real 24 hour effort at the Desert Solstice would be perfect for that (If I'm fortunate enough to be invited again!). All of this is a looong way off though, so it's all quite tentative until we see how much Sammy enjoys viewing the world at about 8mph for hours on end!
  • For now, it's back to being enjoying every minute of quality time together as the Rose Family Trio! See you all in the Spring!

Hey Dan, Congratulations! We started with our first so in a BOB Revolution when he was 3 months old, on smooth bike trails. The BOB with a swivel front wheel is a great one, though it was a bit pricey. When the second one was born, we picked up a used generic double jogger for $50 and have used that one a lot too. Baby jogger runs are awesome, enjoy the bonding time.

Good to hear that you and Sam are doing well! I heard that there is some run in May that is worth trying to get in shape for if you can...

I like the first event on you 2012 schedule ;)

I have missed your blog! Probably not as much as you are missing a good night's sleep though. If you find a jogging stroller light enough to carry easily up and down lots of flights of stairs, please let me know. All the ones we saw looked as if they could survive the world's most forbidden terrain, and weighed approximately a ton.

What a great photo, Dan -- the first of many (thousands), I'm sure!

I'm also glad you're planning a fall race schedule. And there is zero doubt the Coury brothers will invite you back for Desert Solstice. They need star power and you definitely have plenty of that (as you know)!

Wow, congrats, Dan! So happy for you! In terms of baby joggers, I loved the BOB. I had one of the originals back in 2002, when my first son was born! Nice knobby tires so you can do a little off-roading! I got a double baby jogger when the second son came along 2 years later. That was also a great stroller. One of the biggest problems is sun in baby's eyes...neither one of my joggers had a very good canopy, but BOB has significantly improved their design - baby jogger prob has too, but don't know for sure. Important things: pockets, rain/wind cover (you'll use this more than you think you will) foldability for putting in car (BOB was great). Good luck and enjoy fatherhood!

Congratulations. We just had our second in December.
In terms of strollers, I had our daughter running with me at about 3 weeks in a BOB Revolution. Loved it. Tracks pretty well, it's mobile aid station, super easy to collapse, etc. With our son born, we decided to go with a Chariot Cougar 2 so my wife could ride with me while I ran. Though it's more difficult to fold down, it's easier for her to get in and out of and seems to hold up well. I put over 3k miles on the BOB and the thing doesn't show wear...I"m hoping I get the same mileage from the Chariot. One bit of advice: Buy tennis racket tape and tape up the bars where you grip the stroller to prevent wearing down the foam tape.
All the best

congrats! We have been running with a Baby Jogger II that was given to us, it is 13yrs old now and was used for marathon training and we currently use it ~5x/week in all weather. our son is now 1yr old and through the winter months he fits in a homemade down sleeping bag with warmers in the bag. the wind/rain cover is a must have. not sure how many thousands of miles it has on it by now and it still works terrific! the biggest advantage to the baby jogger is how light it is, no frills, just a lightweight jogger with minimal resistance.
